Upcycled Sweater Felt Tassels

Have you noticed that tassels are everywhere at the moment, they are on bags, cushions throws, and even clothes. I do think they add a bit of fun, so I decided to make some of my own.

As I love to upcycle and repurpose the things around me I decided to make my tassels out of my sweater felt scraps.

Recently I had made a patchwork blanket out of old sweaters (see here) and had some scraps left over which would be perfect for this project.
To felt old wool sweaters you just put them on a hot wash. If you don't have any old wool sweaters you can use normal craft felt for this project.
You will need a piece of felt about 10cm square. Draw a line about 2cm from the top of the square.
Then using scissors cut strips into the felt about 4-5mm thick up to the drawn line.
Next, apply glue to the strip of felt above the line.
Then roll up the felt square tightly and secure with a pin as the glue dries.
You can then either neaten up the top of the felt tassel by gluing in a felt band or by using a tassel topper.
Tassel toppers are great if you want to use your felt tassel as a bag charm or keychain. You can get them here.

They are really that simple to make. It's a great craft to make with kids.

You can also use them as present toppers.

As this was such a fun simple craft, I actually made quite a few felt tassels and hung them up in a garland. Which you can see on the blog, they make for a gorgeous decoration.

Looks terrific! I too like to work with felted wool and also like to make tassels so I thought I'd share one with you. It's looped fringe instead of straight like yours. (I do love yours; I think it has as simple elegance, simple being a good thing in this case.) Instead of using a purchased tassel topper, I attached the skirt to a ball felted of wool roving, which I covered with wool roses. (The trim hides the join.) I keep thinking I'll make another like this; I gave this one away some time back. But I may incorporate some of your techniques in with mine. I love learning new things!
