Water Bottle Flowers

I was looking at the shape of a flavored water bottle one day. The shape was different than most others. I liked that it was slender. I knew I wanted to do a craft using them. Since I drink one or two bottles of water a day there was quite a few bottles to transform into something new. I had seen a post on making flowers out of plastic bottles. So I thought why not try it.
I pulled off all of the labels. I then washed out all of my bottles and the caps. I had to decide how long I wanted the petals to be to know where to cut the bottle in half. I took a pair of Sharpe scissors and cut the bottle into two pieces. I cut about two to three inches down from the neck of the bottle.
I put the bottom half to the side for another project. Hint the bottom of the bottle is the shape of a flower. I started cutting my petals. Start at the cut end and cut until you reach the neck. I didn't measure the width of the petals. I just guessed. I made some of the petals tips round the others pointed.
I bent the petals backwards. That way it looks like a flower that has bloomed.
After I finished cutting out the first bottle I continued on to the other eight. I spray painted the flowers and the caps with orange and green Krylon paint that adheres to plastic. Make sure you let the paint dry completely. Dont get in a big hurry with this step. You end up having fingerprints on your petals and paint on your fingers. The next batch will be aqua and coral.
I glued the caps to the center of the flowers. One flower I used a plastic soda bottle and water bottle glued together. And for the center I glued two buttons together. I think that one is my favorite.
I drilled a hole in the neck of the bottle to insert a dowel rod for the stem. Drilled in the thinner part of the neck.
They look like pinwheels when they are finished. I like how they turned out. And each one looks a little different.
It was fun making them. Plus they add color to my inside plants. I didn't paint the dowel rods because I wasn't sure if the paint would harm my plants.
Suggested materials:
  • Water bottles, clear E6000 glue, dowel rods, Krylon paint for plastic and drill

Thank you Wendy. I'm on the hunt for different shaped plastic bottles to use. I'm hooked. Here's a couple more I've painted.
