Our church’s Christmas play is almost upon us. We needed some lightweight, inexpensive but good looking headdresses that dont look like crowns. I believe we have created just the thing.
My son Kevin was my elf in this project. I haven’t been able to get out of bed for a week, but my brain has been spinning ideas. When I thought “lightweight” and easy to wear, my Hometalker training went straight to “pool noodles”. I sent my elf to pull out a variety of fabrics stored at the church, and a pool noodle from the garage.
I got Kevin to measure a pool noodle around his head, uncut, and wrapped in the prettiest fabric, which is actually a pillow sham. He really wasn’t convinced until I had him slice the noodle in half lengthwise.
With a pool noodle split in half, the noodle lay flat on the thick fabric. We experimented on which side to roll for the curved crown of the headdress. One way showed the colorful side facing the back of the stage. The other showed the colorful side over the shoulders. We safety-pinned the fabric to fabric, rolled tightly, with the option of hot gluing the fabric to fabric at the last dress rehearsal.
We tried this and several other fabrics. We like how good a long length of lightweight brown fabric flowed that we left it long, below the knees in the back. I showed Kevin how to roll at a diagonal to get striped fabric look as if it had ribbons running through it.
I had to get this shot, rough beard and all. My sweet, wearing a pillow sham, modeling a Wise Man’s headdress. Job complete!

Update: The second wise man’s headrest was plain brown fabric cut to reach HER waist. The third wise man was a teenager, so he needed a cool headdress. Here they all are.
