Upgrading A Dated Ottoman Tray

Recently, I redecorated my living room. But it wasn't in my budget to replace my ottoman/coffee table. I liked that the ottoman had storage, but I was not crazy about the tray, with its cheap faux wood finish.

So, I decided to give it an upgrade.

First, I primed it using a spray-on primer.

Then, I spray painted it with an antique gold spray paint. It took several coats to get an even finish.

To make the paint more durable and stable, I applied a couple of coats of polyurethane finish to the tray after painting it. For this I used an edger pad.

Now it was time for the beautiful artisan paper, which I found at a fabric/crafts store.

Then, I had a piece of plexiglass cut to fit inside the tray.

Now the artisan paper is on the tray and protected under the sheet of plexiglass.

I did a little styling, and now it looks like this.

Coasters won't be needed on this ottoman - the plexiglass protects it from water rings and makes it easy to clean.

If I get tired of the artisan paper or want a different look for the changing seasons, it will be easy to lift the plexiglass and replace the paper. I can even use fabric instead.

Here is another look I tried earlier with a cotton fabric.

As I mentioned earlier, this project was just one piece of my living room transformation. To see the whole transformation, with before and after photos, check out this post. For a bit more detail on this ottoman tray project, check out the link provided below.

Regarding the project cost: I managed to get the artisan paper and the plexiglass sheet for 50% off, and I had the primer, spray paint, and finish on hand. However, the cost I listed is my best estimate of what it would cost to purchase all items. Your cost may vary depending on what you have on hand.

My time estimate doesn't include drying time for primer and paint.
