Adding Faux Painted Shutters & French Rustic Touches Behind the Couch

After having my DIY Paris map on the wall behind the couch for about a good year, I knew that the space still seemed unfinished. I wanted to add more behind the couch to finish the large size wall.
I really loved the look of adding vintage shutters, but sometimes they can be quite pricey and hard to locate. I happened to have a pair of vinyl exterior shutters left over and they were just the perfect size that I was looking for. I thought well if maybe I add the right faux painted finish to the shutters they could seem vintage and could work perfectly. So I hung the shutter and added layers of different paint colors in a dry brushed technique and finished it off with some ASCP dark wax.
Though the shutters were the perfect touch, there was still something that felt unfinished about the wall. Now that the shutters flowed into the couch and the map wall art did not, it seemed as if it was floating and the gap between the couch and map was now awkward. I thought well if I could maybe add some sort of shelf to above the couch that would fix the emptiness. I just was not quite sure though if adding a shelf directly to the top of the couch would be breaking "design rules" Well I did it anyway. I added L brackets to the shelf and rested the front on top of the couch a bit. I added just the right accessories and the wall now felt complete. Did I break a design rule? maybe? but do I love it? yes! So that to me makes breaking design rules all worth it...and just goes to show there really is no such thing as a real design rule. The space now completed the french-rustic-design that I love.
