DIY Art From Thrift Store

Thrift stores are a valuable resource for upcyling old artwork and frames for anyone decorating on a tight budget. I picked this piece of art up from a local thrift store for a few dollars and will use it to make custom art for a beach condo.
First I rolled on a base coat of white paint (Heirloom Traditions Cashmere) which includes a built in primer. If your paint doesn't have a bonding primer built in then it will require a primer coat first.
Next I cut out stencils with my new Silhouette machine (affiliate link) on cardstock. But don't worry if you don't have a cutting machine because you can easily use pre-made stencils! (I did just that for years.) After I had a layout planned I decided to use cut-out vinyl instead of just stenciling. (Either method would work, but I wanted to play with my new toy!)
I wanted the turtles to be a different color than the text in my sign, so I taped off that area and painted it blue and green. I left the area white for the text.
I adhered my vinyl cut outs (white in the photo) and then painted the entire surface blue.
Once the paint was dry I used a spatula tool to remove the vinyl.
It's super exciting to see the colors start to appear!
This sign was designed for a beach condo in North Carolina. The area is known for the abundant sea turtle life and even has a turtle hospital on the island!
I hope you enjoyed today's project! I'd like to invite you to stop by my blog, The Black Sheep Shoppe, to see other projects I am working on. (One last note: the costs are only estimates based on what I already had on hand. Your cost will vary depending on whether you have a cutting machine or if you use stencils, etc.)

Very cool idea! I used to live on Topsail Island and volunteered with the Sea Turtle Project.
