Picture frame transformed into a chalkboard.

The Frame

I’ve been known to hold on to things with the intent of using them for something one day 😳 but please, don’t ask my husband about my collection 😂 because he’d probably tell ya that I have too many to count 🙄 This frame was used in my daughter’s wedding almost 4 years ago, it was purchased from an antique store. I loved it and it was gifted to me by my daughter. When I decided to convert my daughters old room into a craft room, I knew I’d use this frame to create a large chalkboard. The frame fits a 58 X 28 picture and guess what, I didn’t have to paint it because I already loved the color. Score!

Particle board paneling

Sorry, this isn’t the best photo but it kind of gives you an idea of what the particle board looks like. I paid about $11 for a large panel from HomeDepot and they cut it for me. The black that you see is where I started to spray paint it but then I remembered that I should have taken a photo of the board.

The Chalk-paint

I used Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray paint purchased from HomeDepot. I applied 3 coats to make sure I had even coverage and I allowed it to dry.

Curing it with chalk

The directions on the can stated to rub chalk over the entire surface and that’s exactly what I did.

Wipe off

The next step was to wipe off the excess chalk, couldn’t get any easier right? 😉 Once I wiped off the chalk, I wrote my quote and inserted the chalkboard into the frame.

The finish look

Here is the finished chalkboard in my craft room. This was very easy to make and a fun and fast DIY project. I really enjoyed making it. I hope you get inspired to make one of your own.
