I was browsing around Hobby Lobby one day and came across some pictures in frames on clearance for around $4 each - such an awesome deal! I wasn't crazy about the photos, but I loved the frames. I decided for $12ish for three frames I'd get them and make my own art for the inside! With a few materials I took a stock photo and made it something that fits my home much better!

Materials Needed -

paint, paint brush, marker, pencil, scissors and matting board.

This is the matting board I got - just a thicker piece of paper. I was able to get all three frames with this one piece. I just measured and cut to size.

This is the first step in the project.

This was the photo that was in all of the frames - a cool photo but it doesn't really match anything in my home.

This was one of my inspiration photos for what I wanted. As you can see you could buy something similar but it'll cost you much more than simply doing it yourself.

Step Two - Paint

I painted around the frames a simple shape and let it dry. I did two coats to make sure it was even.

As you can see this was the matting board that came with the frame and the original photo. This is would be an easy step if you didn't have one made or you could just have the drawing without one!

This is the paint color I used. It's from Hobby Lobby and was around $1.59.

Step Three - Pencil Out Drawing

Between my husband and I, he is the better drawer so I tasked him out to do the drawing part for me. I showed him roughly what I wanted and he got to work! This is super simple though and mapping out what you want with a pencil makes it much easier. You can simply erase and fix anything if you mess up or don't 100% love it.

Step Four - Trace With Marker

We debated tracing over the pencil with a marker or some black paint and ultimately decided to just use a fat tip sharpie to make it easier. In the end you can't even tell anyways!

Step Five - Put frame back together and hang up!

I love the way these turned out, I love how they all flow together. They are so versatile too! I originally made these for my guest bedroom but have since moved and now have them in my living room where I see them everyday.

Without the cost of the frames this project only cost around $5 - matting board or drawing board and some paint.

In all I ended up spending less than $20 including frames which I think is a steal of a deal for three framed pieces of art. I love that these pieces are something my husband and I made together - makes it that much more special.

    Great job.!! Clean, simple, artistic!

you show a rattan egg chair in your last frame…. Does that sit on a metal frame with legs?? I have an egg chair that I need to hang. Not portable. Would love to know where you purchased the metal frame/support from.

    many thanks

    Carol
