DIY Yarn Wall Hanging (you Won't Belief How I Made This)

I am in love with the bohemian beachy look that is so in style now. And I truly love the macrame wall hangings that go with this style. But I don't have time to make a real one, nor do I have the talent. Yet I was craving a little wall decor and I really wanted one with that boho vibe. So when I spotted something at the thrift store I instantly thought it could be turned into a yarn wall hanging, without the effort and time needed for a real macrame wall hanging.

Go thrifting to find the background for your wall hanging

I found two crochet curtains with fringe that I could totally see transformed into a wall hanging.

If you can find something to use as a base this will make this project so much easier and quicker. I used these crochet curtains, but pillow cases, tapestries, woven wall hangings or open knit fabrics would work too. Just make sure the material lends itself to be transformed easily

Lay it all out and decide how tall and wide you want your finished work to be.

Work your material to give you the desired base.

I simply cut off the fringe from one of the curtains (crochet work is forgiving like that) Then I turned it upside down and hand sewed it to the other one. No need to be fussy, quick and easy is the way to go.

Prepare some embellishments

Gather your leftover bits of yarn, ribbon, fringe etc and have fun.

Find yourself some nice movie to watch (in my case the show of choice would be an english detective) grab your yarn and start making pompoms and do some old fashioned spool knitting and make extra embellishments.

Put it all together

I used the crochet work as a base for some weaving, knotting and sewing. Whatever worked with my base fabric and with the yarns and ribbons that I was working with. I just kept adding rows until it started to look full.

Keep adding (and distracting) until you like the final result

I used ribbon, wool yarn, my pompoms, pompom and tassel ribbon and some of the fringe I cut of from the top curtain to create my final look.

This is my finished wall hanging

I love the boho look, I love that I created it myself, and I really love that I upcycled those outdated little crochet cafe curtains into this fab new wall hanging

Here is it is hanging proudly on my wall. I love it when a project comes together!
