During the pandemic lockdown, we "traveled" by watching theme park YouTube videos. One video featured the Hard Rock Hotel Universal Orlando. In it we spotted an amazing art piece made from drumsticks.

This is our interpretation of that wall art.

Please take a few minutes to watch the video. It covers all the details of the build as well as how we hung it on the wall.

Since we didn't have 48 pairs of drumsticks laying around, Steph ordered what we needed online. We actually ordered twice as once we initially laid out the sticks, we decided we wanted to create a larger piece so we ordered an additional 24 sets after getting the first set of 24.

After much consideration, we decided to use Steph's house wall paints. We use these jars for storing the paint and add a QR code sticker to the front. The QR code links to all the information about the paint should we need to buy more.

Using a screen shot of the video inspiration piece, we painted the drumsticks with the various colors. You can see that picture in our blog post along with the number of each color we used.

We laid out the drumsticks in the pattern we wanted and then used construction adhesive to glue them onto a backer board. We painted the board the color of the wall where it was to be hung.

To keep everything in place while the construction adhesive dried, we put all the heavy thing on top of it! You'll notice there is a brown board on top of the backer board. We used this to more evenly distribute the weight from all the heavy things. This is not part of the finished wall art.

We placed a French cleat on the back. The other half of the French cleat was placed on the wall. French cleats are a very secure way to hang heavy stuff on the wall. We use them a lot.

Once the French cleats were secure on the wall, we lowered the art piece onto them. We also added some battery powered lights above the wall art.

Here it is! It looks great in the same space as our upcycle drum table.

Great project. I had a thought after I saw you install the lights above the drum sticks. Did you consider installing an LED strip of lights on the cleat or board which I think would give a cool up light effect of the sticks on the wall? I’m not sure if it would work this specific project but I have seen this idea done on a number of projects and the results are really cool.

So many possibilities! All kinds of sticks would look great - small branches that land in my yard after heavy winds.

    Thanks for the inspiration!!
