My daughter's family is raising chickens. They have fallen in love with all things fowl. I came across this adorable stencil and knew I had to make something out of it for her home. To be honest, it sat in the closet for months before inspiration struck. While cleaning out my craft room, I found 8x10 canvas boards. I realized they were a close fit with the stencil and decided to see what I could make of it.

These are the canvas panels. They are 8" x 10" and about 1/8" thick. They are bright white and the finish is a bit rough. I felt that a coating of chalk paint would improve the base for stenciling.

I gave it a coat of light gray and let it dry completely. Next, I gave it a coat of white. Before it dried, I wiped it back with a paper towel to give it a weathered effect.

This isn't a tutorial on how to stencil so I won't go through those steps. I kept my colors simple, using the red for some punch. Once it was completely dry, I went over it with dark wax, using a stiff bristle brush.

I had a wood frame in my stash with an 8 x 10 opening. This is the back.

Using a tin snips, a piece of chicken wire was cut the same size as the canvas. Be careful...the wire is sharp.

I laid it between two cookie sheets and placed a weight on top in order to flatten it out.

The chicken wire was set into the frame, followed by the stenciled canvas, and another canvas board to fill in the remaining space.

The final step was to tape a piece of thin cardboard on the back and following that with brown paper to give it a finished look.

Here's the finished piece. I cant wait to give it to my daughter!
