If you are looking to add character to a room or space in your home, think about stenciling an accent wall. Stencils are very inexpensive, easily customizable as far as colors and sometimes sizes, and they turn out absolutely gorgeous. If you are willing to put the time in, you can create a gorgeous focal wall in your home using a stencil.
First, you'll want to choose your room or space. Then, decide on a color or colors for the stencil. This may involve painting the room, if you want your stencil to have a different background color than the color the room is now. We painted our mudroom white prior to stenciling.
Choose a starting point for your stencil. This is an area that will be very visible. Your stencil might cut off at the corners of the wall. Keep that in mind as you choose your starting point.
Using a rounded brush that isn't too flimsy, dip your paint in the brush and start dabbing it on. Don't use brush strokes just dab, dab, dab.
Once you've done your first stencil, move the template over to do the next stencil. Use the registration marks on the stencil to line it up (without needing a ruler or level).
I only stenciled the top 1/3 of the wall and installed shiplap below. Shiplap tutorial coming next.
