I have a confession: I love instant coffee!

Wow it feels good to say that out loud. And there is always a jar full of instant in my laundry room of at all times.

Wait... Instant coffee in my laundry room?! YES. Before you judge my weird habit and unconventional tastes heat me out: I don't actually drink it.

Nope! Not a drop. As a mom I need legit, from the bean coffee. No, my instant coffee isn't for drinking, it's for wood staining.

This is hands down the best alternative to harsh chemicals of typical storebought stains, and WAY more affordable!

To start, brew up (or rather mix up) a concentrated cup of instant coffee and store it in an airtight container.

Why not just use regular coffee? Instant gives a richer color and quicker results. I tested regular coffee as a stain, and it took several applications before a color change was noticeable.

Whatever project you're working on, follow your typical steps and sand the wood before staining. This is my wood before staining.

To apply the instant coffee stain, use an old rag or old cotton tee. Dip it into the stain and apply it to the wood by rubbing it gently with the grain. Going against the grain may splinter small pieces of the wood and create a less smooth result.

Allow the stain to dry until it no longer feels damp to the touch (about 1 hour should suffice). Then add your top coat to seal your project!

Using instant coffee stain is a natural way to stain any wood project, eliminate chemicals and also provide a food safe option when creating serving trays, wood counters, cutting boards and tables!
