A few years ago I saw pictures of Meg Ryan's home in Elle Decor magazine and I've had a major crush on her "Flowers" ever since. Of course, the Sleepless in Seatlle star probably has the one and only vintage metal sign and even if there were more than one I could never afford it but I knew I wanted a version of that sign in my dining room, even it it was an itty bitty version, so we made our own. Sorry for the picture quality.
Inspiration picture. I wish we had that open ceiling space. Picture from Elle Decor magazine.
Our version!
We started with the left over wood from our fireplace build. A 1x6 and 2 furring strips. we glued it together and used screws from the backside.
I bought paper mâché letters at my local craft store here in Germany and sprayed them with metalic paint.
We added bolts and washers but just for looks.
The letters were glued to the top using a German version of liquid nails and the whole piece was painted with hammered metal paint and burnished with an espresso glaze.
Not the real thing but we really like it. The block lettering and look of metal brings a bit of modern and manliness to our home which is primarily white and can can come off a bit feminine.
In Germany the walls are concrete. We hung it using a hammer drill and anchors.
