My sister was helping our brother clean out his garage. She came across these two dusty window shutters and started to put them in the donate box but decided to put them aside for me. I'm so glad she kept them for me. There is something about shutters, old doors and windows I love. I guess because you can repurpose them in so many ways. They sat in my livingroom for about a month and then my basement. I was deciding what I would make with them. Well I got one of them out today to do a project. I got on Hometalk & Pinterest for inspiration. Wow what a big selection of choices of projects using shutters. Then I came across this shutter turned shelf for sale. I was shocked when I seen the price $58.50 plus S&H. I knew this was the project for me. What was great about it was it wouldn't cost me a dime!
I cleaned the shutter with mild soap and water. I gathered up some supplies I needed. I went down to the basement to look for wood to make the two shelves I would be adding to the shutter.
I found chain for the shelves and a metal medallion to add to the top of the shutter. I also found the wood for the shelves. I measured how long the shelf needed to be. I cut two pieces of wood. That was the hardest part of this project. I had to saw the boards with a small hand saw.
The two painted shelves.
I then added my chain on both sides of the two shelves. It is just for looks not support for the shelves.
Sorry I skipped the part where I painted the two shelves and shutter.
I marked on the shutter where the two shelves would be. I drilled from the back of the shutter and into the back of the shelves. I screwed in long wood screws.
I then added the chain to the shelves
Side view of shelf.
I nailed the metal medallion to the top of the shutter.
I added a sawtooth picture hanger to the back of the shutter. I hung it on the wall and added my bird and glass jar.
My knock off version of shutter turned shelf.
