Mass produced wall art, bleh...repurposed cabinet door plus Unicorn SPiT, yeah!
Cabinet doors that come from kitchen and bathroom remodels really make for perfect wall art canvases. Sand one down and get ready to create!
Blank canvas sanded down and ready to go.
After wiping off the saw dust, decide if you'd like to paint the "frame" of the cabinet first or last. It really is just a preference. For those that I used spray paint by Rustoleum (oil rubbed bronze or Stainless steel), I taped off all that I didn't want overspray to get on and then sprayed on 2-3 light coats, first. For those that I wanted to stain (Kona), I took a sponge brush and applied it to all surfaces I wanted that color, last. Sometimes I wiped excess off; sometimes I applied it liberally. Regardless, let all dry completely.
At this point, the fun began!! Unicorn SPiT gel stain to the rescue. Make sure you didn't sand with more than 125 grit, so that the Stain seeps into the porous surface well.
Apply it any way you'd like. Google Unicorn SpiT or search YouTube for tons and tons of fun ideas and techniques. Develop your own and coin a new technique!
I used my Cricut to cut out letters and shapes, as needed for each sign.
Sometimes, I applied the letters over the Unicorn SPiT. Then, I'd apply multiple coats of chalk type paint over the entire surface, including the letters. When it had dried overnight, I carefully removed the letters to reveal the beautiful and colorful message underneath.
Other times, I applied the letters/message directly to the colorful surface only.
After everything on each old cabinet door was just the way I liked it, I applied polyurethane to all of the exposed surfaces. This provides protection AND it causes the SPiT to vibrantly "pop" in a way that cannot be duplicated with any other product. It's fabulous!!
Do your part to repurpose old wood, including cabinet doors, into beautiful pieces of FUNky, colorful, one of a kind art.
