Mountain Wall Mural

A while back, I stumbled across a simplified mural of mountains, and knew I had to have one in my house. I decided to paint it on the wall that is directly across from my bed. Since we are using navy as a primary accent color in our room, I went to Lowe’s and picked up a gallon of navy paint and a gallon of a cream color. I took a pencil and sketched the mountain ranges by hand, stepped back and gave it a look over, made a few modifications and then determined how many shades I needed – I ended up with 9 distinct “levels” of mountains.

I like to use small rollers when I paint. Even if I’m painting an entire wall the same color, I never use more than a 6″ wide roller, and I actually prefer to use the 4″ version. I feel like I have more control, end up with less spatter. I’m okay with it taking longer. I find I’m happier with the results in the end. To fill in these shapes I outlined, I used 2″ “touch up” foam rollers.

I mixed the 2 original colors together in varying amounts to get 7 intermediary shades, and then, starting at the top, I filled them in.

honestly I could have done this entire mural in a single day if I had had 9 paint rollers. But, hindsight notwithstanding, this was the end result –

I. LOVE. IT. It is absolutely amazing and turned out even better than I originally expected, which is really saying something. I did, however, learn a few things along the way. So, if you decide to do something like this, or if I decide to do another one somewhere else in the house… here are a few things that I would have done differently – for more information and my tips on painting your own mural, check out the full post on my blog - www.8mightbeenough.com

To finish off the wall, I found navy outlets on Amazon and they blend awesomely with the mountains. This house also has a number of telephone jacks and cable outlets – none of which are being used – so I am replacing all of those in the house with blank plates that I have painted to match the walls.

I count this project as a HUGE success and one of my very favorites to date.
