I love chalkboards, they are perfect for inspirational quotes, fun drawings, sweet notes and lists and so much more.

Chalk boards can be made out of almost any thing but using a vintage painting is the perfect choice for creating a jumbo black board.
This very large painting which is a print and not a nice looking in person as this picture may show. The frame however was solid wood and had ornate details. It just needed color. But what color was yet to be decided. I knew I wanted a classic neutral color.
Using painters tape I taped off the vintage frame and applied 3 coats of rustoleum chalk board paint sanding lightly between coats.
The vintage frame was painted in Homestead House milk paint in confederate grey, the perfect dark neutral grey. I applied 2 coats of the milk paint and sealed it with their black wax. I left the original gold inner trim for a punch of glam.
and here it is, already to be put to use
The ornate frame turned out perfect, right? I love repurposing and reusing out of date items to give them new life and this one has many more years ahead. icon

Did you try it, does it write and erase properly? What is black wax?

  • Ellen Ellen on Nov 02, 2020

Did you prime the chalkboard by covering it with chalk and then rubbing off? If you don't, the first thing you write will always be a "ghost" on the board.

The picture that I want to use for this project is on canvas. Will that work for a chalkboard?
