Wall paper can be painted over, check with a paint store about the correct product to use.

The downside is--if you ever wish to remove it in the future it will be VERY difficult to do.

We bought a house where a couple of the rooms had that done. Being older we just had a new coat of paint put over it, doesn't look to bad.

If you plan on painting, the paint could loosen the glue and cause the paper to come loose. You may need to take the wallpaper off, unless you plan on using something on the walls like wood.

Don't paint it. It is very wicked to get off after it has been painted. I had to do this once, NEVER again....

I've heard of people using a sheetrock compound so it looks like a regular wall.

You can also paper over wallpaper if it's in good condition. If the new paper is light weight and a light color, it might be a good idea to prep the wall with a wall paper liner. It was hide flaws and prevent colors for showing through. There are also plain white wallpapers that are embossed with a pattern. They are generally used to be painted over and look really inviting. Google embossed wallpaper for samples. Good luck! Post pictures.
