How can I determine if it is safe to take down a portion of a wall?
There is a small wall dividing the living room and kitchen and I would like it to be more open between the rooms but am unsure if it is structurally wise to remove it. Is there an inexpensive way to find out?

Yep, have a contractor determine if the wall is load bearing or not. Also the wall may be used as a chase for pipes, electrical, ducts. If the wall can be removed cut a small inspection hole and use a flashlight look inside if there are any obstructions that may need to be rerouted.
Call a pro, need to see what's in it and what it wood take to remove it.
