Hey Brenda, actual ship lap is pretty hard to come by these days. You can router out a groove to create the "lap" along a 1x6 that would get you pretty close to the real thing. You could also put up tongue and groove and paint it - that would look a lot like ship lap. Honestly though just 1x6s tacked side by side together really looks like ship lap. Its hard to tell whether there is the "lap" part anyway once its installed.
Most "ship lap" is a tongue and groove wood material... you can find it in pine at most home improvement stores... but DIYnetwork.com and HGTV.com will have information on what to use... and how to install it... and lots of ideas for it too.

I would check tongue and groove boards, wood flooring and plywood sales (just router the "grooves"). Shiplap is trendy= expensive, and you can tweak the other boards to your liking.
