How can we make wood paneling look brighter and more presentable?

  • You can always paint it, or another option is to add colourful pictures or mirrors to the wall.

    You could start by cleaning it with tsp. If that isn't what you are looking for you could either paint or whitewash it.

  • If it’s the veneer stuff from the 70s, definitely paint it. If it’s real high quality wood, painting it will be a personal preference. You can always brighten a room with good lighting, art, light and bright decor and furniture. But, you can paint the real wood as well, that will be up to you if you want to or not.

    There's a product called Panel Magic, and an affiliated line of "Magic" cabinet and wood cleaners. My mom used to use Panel Magic to clean paneled kitchen walls.

    I opted to paint the paneling I had, because it was the plywood-type stuff from the 70s. It looked great painted, and the room was much brighter.
