How do update my wainscot walls?
My walls are mostly wainscott. Came with home. It's one of the thing that I most liked about it. Although not in best shape. Some areas are painted and some rails are loose. Now I'm really beginning to dislike it. It also makes the room very dark. I would love to lighten them up for a fresher updated look. Sanding would be painfully long and repacing is not in the budget at the moment. Help for 2019 and ready.

You could paint it a lighter color, or do a white-wash technique.
Can you share a photo? Painting could be beautiful and worth the work in the long run. :)
secure and repair any area of your wainscoting that needs it. You should use caulk around any seam that is not flush together. I'd prime the surface and paint white - wainscot is a stunning feature to any room.
I would repair any damage and then paint them the same color so that they flow better.
