I have Contact paper on my walls that I'd like to remove.

I'd like to remove it and paint but the top layer of the sheetrock peels off. Can I still paint the walls?

I think you would have to put primer on the walls after this.

  • Yes, but you will need to use a good primer first. Exactly why I am personally not a fan of contact paper on walls. Good luck!

Only if you skim coat the peeled off parts with drywall patch and prime those spots first.

    Use a hair dryer:

You will need to use a good "blocking" primer such as Kilz or Zinsser to insure your paint doesn't just soak into the sheetrock since the paper came off with the contact paper removal. The primer should provide a base and a barrier for the new paint to adhere to well.

If you live in a mobile home.... that is just the way they made the walls.... the contact paper IS part of the dry wall.... we have the same problem... and they colors and patterns are UUUUGGAAALLLYYY !! and they put the little "battons" over the seams, which are too wide to fill with dry wall mud...

even after taping.... we tried painting and the paint (even after a primer) can scrape off if bumped just the right way... we have had the best success by applying a spray on wall texture (similar to popcorn ceiling..just a lot smoother).... you can rent the machine.... we used the one with the syphon gun instead of the hopper on top of the gun) ...it sticks to the walls quite well.... BUT it is really messy. One tip: keep the gun moving... (my husband used to paint cars... and likes to stop at the end of each pass... which results in a "splot"... it took him a while to learn to keep it moving)

Then you just prime and paint

Yes! Sand any areas that are torn or loose. Then I would suggest chalk or another textured paint. If the Contact paper was vibrant, you may need a coat or two of primer, then paint. Best wishes ☺️

    Hello,

You will need to line the walls with a thick paper before you paint!
