If you don't want to remove it, could you paint it? Maybe a brighter color like a light gray or white? And then hang a large piece of art in the center?

I don’t think I ant to paint it and it’s kinda a sand stone so maybe a mantle would make it look better if I don’t take it off?

It is a pretty accent wall. I would add maybe a large picture or mirror over the fireplace with a more substantial mantle. Maybe build a corner TV cabinet which would give it a more cohesive look.

People would die for a wall like that. Neutral light color. People paint dark brick fireplaces. Don't touch it. A chunky mantle shelf would look great. A mantle would mean eliminating the shelves on each side.

Brick a new makes a great kit for painting brick. Their gray's are beautiful. I would not white wash it. You could just buy some brick enhancer at Home Depot which would also seal the stone. I would try that first.

Sheetrock or shiplap over. Or decorate it with a grouping to break it up a bit
