I started with a white wash on brick then light grey, followed by black. All watered down with a 1:1 water t paint ratio. Once done I took ash from the fireplace, brushed it on for highlights and sprayed a satin poly on the brick to keep the accent. may sound like a process but I would start trying different applications and have fun with it!.

Many years ago, on top of paneled walls, I took big blobs of dry wall compound and used a 2" putty knife and just began to make the blobs into field stone shapes. Eyeballing the space between my field stones. Since I wanted dimensional stones, I added layers over and over. I guess it took about one week, working on it as I wanted, the wall is about 10' X 7'. I waited 2 weeks to be sure it was thoroughly dry. I worried it might fall off the paneling or pull the whole wall down but, didn't happen. I didn't seal anything.

The wood stove surround is real stone, so I made mine look similar as I could. I even covered the old paneled beam to look as though it was painted. My husband added rough looking corbels to each side of the beam. THIS WAS A VERY UNATTRACTIVE SPACE, I didn't think I could hurt it. I didn't take photos while working on this, I didn't know about Hometalk at the time. You are welcome to contact me. Rosie
