Yes, you can paint it. First you will need to clean with something like TSP. Then prime with Kilz Original or Bullseye. Then you can paint, 2 coats, with any type of paint you want to use. I used behr's latex paint when I painted ours and it did beautifully.
If it's real wood, I recommend oil based primer and paint. More durable.
Paint!!! Use Kilz primer first or a paint with a primer in it.

We have a log cabin and too much wood is dark and dreary.
We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling over natural cedar logs in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitate to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
