How can I update dark wall paneling?

walkout basement has paneling from the late 60’s. Can I paint it? If so is there a specific kind of paint to use?thank you

Yes, you can paint it. First you will need to clean with something like TSP. Then prime with Kilz Original or Bullseye. Then you can paint, 2 coats, with any type of paint you want to use. I used behr's latex paint when I painted ours and it did beautifully.
If it's real wood, I recommend oil based primer and paint. More durable.

We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling over natural cedar logs in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitate to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
