What can I put between kitchen and living room to replace knee wall?

I've got a pretty small kitchen, about 12' x 10.5' . There's a doorway attached to a knee wall that I'd like to make into a combination of a breakfast bar with more storage beneath. That wall runs the same direction as the roof ridge. If it's a load bearing wall I'm not going to do it myself but I'm told load bearing walls run perpendicular to the ridge of the roof.

I'm looking for ideas. The length of the wall, including the doorway, is almost exactly 9 feet, with a standard eight foot ceiling height. I'd like it to flow better into the living area but don't need a lot of seating. We don't do a lot of entertaining and it's mainly my husband and me. Thanks folks!

Just build the Semi-Partition for the Island/Counter/Bar around the Knee Wall.

It is hard to offer realistic suggestions on how you could improve the space without seeing what exactly you have to work with. Please post some pictures of your kitchen so that we can try to answer your question.
