How can I remove wallpaper easily and inexpensively?

We have hunter green (remember that phase in decorating??) wallpaper in our master bathroom. I know about steaming... and fabric softener... Is there anything else out there that is less messy and perhaps a bit faster?

I found that a 1:1 ratio of water to downy sprayed on the wallpaper then wait an hour and start to peel it away

No fast less messy way. You got it. Steamer, water and fabric softener, vinegar and water.

I would not use the tool that many people say to use. It marks the wall up. I have done more wall paper than I care to mention as I have live in 10 different places.

Peel the top layer off with your fingers, find and edge or a seam. You need to get that off for the water to soak into the under layer. I use a spray bottle of water for the layer that is glued on. Do a small area, mist it enough to wet the per, let sit for a few minutes, take a wide blade scraper and begin to peel off from the wall. You can use your fingers to lift and edge and depending on the glue used it may come off in long strips. You will quickly get the hang of it. Use a drop cloth or newspaper of rags as the water will run down he wall. Wash the wall off when you are done to get the rest of the glue off. Time consuming but easy and no chemicals.

i just removed wall paper from our 1990's bathroom. You will have to score the paper with a round tool which I think is called a wallpaper dog. Then I used DIF paper stripper. You roll it on like paint. It's a gel product. Wait a few min then use a scraper to scrape it off. I also dipped a sponge into the gel and washed all the leftover paste in the wall. Rinse with water after. I have never used the fabric softener to strip wall paper so I do not know how it compares to the DIF, aside from price. I have used steamers and hit water in the past and found the DIF was faster and less messy as the paper came off in sheets instead of small messy pieces. I am about to do our spare bedroom which was done in the '90's also. I would have done this sooner had I known how well the DIF worked.
