Thanks to HGTV's Chip & Joanna Gaines who doesn't love shiplap?! 😍 While in the process of redoing my 16 year old son's room I wanted a unique way to display his antique license plate collection. I wanted his room to have a vintage hot rod/garage feel to it. The shiplap delivered the perfect touch!
We bought the shiplap at our favorite closeout store and it was $1/foot. We used an espresso color stain that truly brought out all the beauty of the rustic charm & character. I just used a rag to lightly wipe the stain on.
It was the perfect border used all the way around the room to showcase the plates. We used screws and drilled them in to install the border all the way around the room.
We used extra shiplap pieces to creat a unique frame to show off a fun tin picture I scored at a thrift store & make it fit more scale to the wall
I was loving the shiplap vibe so much I decided on adding an accent wall. I love the contrast of it with the white closets and really gives the room a more custom feel. The shiplap wall we used nails and the nail gun to shoot them in the grooves where the wood is thinner. Very quick to install. The time consuming part was all the cuts of the planks.
His room is still a work in progress as we are still finding the perfect antique pieces and decor but are loving the way this room is heading. This was a very easy and fun rainy day weekend project! ❤️
The beauty of the grain is what makes shiplap so special. Some people paint shiplap for a completely different look or even just keep it natural. I just loved all the knots and grain that the stain highlighted. It was just what I was looking for. Happy shiplapping! ☺️

Is your shiplap tongue and groove? I thought there was usually a space between each board and that the wall behind had to be painted the same colour as the shiplap so the wall colour did not show between the boards. Love the look! Planning on doing an accent wall in my family room.

Did you make the sign of the mustang?

Your son is so lucky to have a parent so invested in making his living space unique and encouraging his interests. I caught what for as a kid for putting Paul McCartney's picture on my floral print wallpaper with one common pin! So glad times have changed!
