When I frequent thrift shops and rummage sales, I seldom pass up a cutting board. I use cutting boards in re-purposing and up-cycling projects all the time!
This is my finished project, a rectangular stenciled cutting board with legs.
This is the before photo of the cutting board purchased at the thrift shop for $1.99.
I like these Kaisercraft lower case letter stencils. I cut them apart and tape them together to form words on my projects. I'm sure you don't have to cut them apart, but I find it easier to center and line up my letters when they are cut up. You can use a letter stencil of your choice.
As you can see, I have put together the word "gather" with my stencil letters. They are taped together with bits of blue painter's tape and also taped to the cutting board. Be careful when you are stenciling with this makeshift stencil so you don't go outside the stencil! I stenciled my cutting board with black acrylic craft paint.
The legs on my cutting board are 1" x 1" x 2 1/2", and cut from a 1" x 1" square dowel. The legs are screwed through the top, and the legs are set on a diagonal.
After I stenciled my cutting board with black acrylic paint, I gave the shelf a coat of steel wool and vinegar stain. I found this recipe on pinterest and have used it many times. I will NOT be using this as a cutting board. It is now a display piece.
After the stain had dried, I wiped on Miss Mustard Seed's hemp oil to seal and protect the cutting board shelf.
The finished shelf is perfect for a kitchen counter or table display!

This is really cute. I also collect cutting boards from thrift stores but am looking for bun feet for the legs. Bun feet are a bit more expensive, but you don't have to screw from the top of the board - a nicer finish I think. I love your tip for the stenciling.

I've also used wooden knobs. They work really well and look good.
