Stenciling With Love

For a long time, I have been put off with the very idea of trying my hand at stenciling. So suffice it to say that when I saw that this week's challenge post was stenciling, I was a bit wary. But never let it be said that this girl is a quitter. So, after a quick trip to Michael's, I had what I thought would be a decent project. I had some pieces in my closet that were woodworking remnants and in fair condition. So with a "can do," spirit I began my project.

I began by painting a 7x5 inch wooden plaque a lovely shade of Parrot Blue. As you can see, the plaque is the result of a previously failed project. I do not believe in waste.

After the paint was nice and dry, I was ready for the stencil. I purchased the stencil because it was cute and inexpensive. Little did I know that it would open a whole new world of enjoyment for me. I was accustomed to the old cut-out, tape down stencils. But much to my surprise, this was anything but typical. It is "Adhesive Screen Stencil." After peeling the backing off, the fabric-like stencil is placed on the plaque and the tacky adhesive keeps it in place. Then...

I chose a black glossy enamel paint. I was looking for lots of contrast, and utilizing a small sponge tamper I was attentive to every little detail to ensure that nothing was left out. I was very patient because of the intricate designs in the lettering. After tamping the paint into all of the little open spaces, I was ready to unveil my project.
