I was drawing unicorns for a project in work and fell in love with one of the drawing. Sadly, I had to turn it in, but before I did so, I copied it and made a nice string art out of it. String art was a popular wall art decor in the 70's, somehow it made a comeback a few years ago and much like my unicorn- it's here to stay.

The finished product

It all started with this drawing...

I cut out the unicorn from the paper, and copied the silhouette of it on a piece of leftover wood I had in the garage. I marked the middle of the wood with a ruler and placed the middle of the unicorn on top of the mark. Then, I used tape to secure it temporarily while I was following the outlines with a pencil.

Then, I outlined the shape completely with nails using my red-painted-hammer, following the silhouette.

I added a few more nails to the outline. It was so therapeutical I couldn't stop. The hard part was making sure all the nails were in the same depth in the wood.

I went back to my drawing board and checked to see if the unicorn still fits and if I need to add more nails where it changes colors.

Then, I started with the head. wrap the string around each nail and following the next one on the outline. Once I had finished outlining all the nails with a certain color, I began filling it in with crisscrossing and wrapping each nail.

I had no pattern I was following, just randomly I picked were to go next with the string. Sometimes it was side to side, sometimes top to bottom. Once I was pleased with the outcome, I tied the knot underneath all the strings.

I glued a piece of black felt to be the closed eye of the unicorn, and a piece of light-blue felt heart shaped - because each unicorn is bringing love to my life.
