Something ingenious that I just had to make and share with all of you. Our church is carpeted just like most of our churches in the U.S.A. When we went to Southern Florida to assist with the Hurricane Irma clean up, the church had these nifty little doorstops. I just had to figure out how to make them and hope that they might help someone else. I know that they will help our church because we are constantly losing the plastic doorstops and they often don't do a very good job. So, here's the scoop. You start with 2 8 foot long pine boards that are 3 inches by 1 inch to make 34 doorstops.
Then you cut those boards into little blocks, each 2 1/4 inch long. Sand all edges fairly smooth. (Chances are small children will be playing with these and you don't want them to get slivers in their delicate skin.)
Then you paint it with two coats of white paint. I chose white because I chose to make it visible and easy to find. I also used homemade chalk paint (acrylic paint mixed with plaster of paris) to help it coat the wood better.
When dry, I stapled three lines of the hook part of the hook and loop material (velcro) to the block - making it as tight as possible - on both sides so that the hooks would not dislodge when you pulled it loose from the carpet. I have a source that I am trying to get 2" wide hook and loop material from (just the hook side only), but as of yet, it has not come in the mail. So, I used three lines of the 3/4" kind.
This is the doorstop in action. You put it on the floor and it attaches itself to the carpet and holds the door open. To close the door, simply pick up the block of wood. The next part is so cool! Where do you put it when you are finished with it?
All of our churches have carpeting that is coved or goes from the floor up the wall about 4 inches. It is a flooring technique that makes vacuuming the floors easier and laying the carpet much easier, too. It helps protect the walls, also. So, pretend this rug laying against my wall is a carpet that is coved against the wall. See how nicely the door stop just sticks to the wall - out of the way until the next time it is needed. It is just unobtrusive and available as can be. I just loved the idea. And, that is my little contribution to the wood challenge. 34 of them!
