I bought this old piano with some money my grandpa gave me for Christmas when we were first married that he specified HAD to go towards a piano. I found this one for a good price on Craigslist, and with the leftover money had the insides, and keys redone. The main problem.... the wood either needed refinishing or painted (and sorry, but I was NOT about to tackle the huge task of refinishing this beast) and the other problem with it was I got a slivers in my booty from the bench and usually kept it covered with something.
Finally I got brave and decided it was going to get a new look! I used the hot wet rag and iron method to remove the top layer of veneer. The moist heat loosens the glue and makes it easy to lift up with a paint scraper.
Thankfully it came very well, so well in fact that my little boy did most of it.
I mixed some homemade chalk paint with a mistint that my mom had picked up for me for $5 in a flea market. So I'm sorry to anyone who might have wanted the name of the color I used - it didn't even have a label around the paint can! Don't even know the brand!
Since I didn't want to paint over the wording on the front, I taped it off and then added a little line/dotted stencil to border it.
This was the more time consuming part - stenciling all my musical words on to the bench!
We've since moved to a new home, and it did get slightly banged up in the moving process but it is pretty unoticable since I distressed the edges with sandpaper anyway.
This was done a couple of years ago, and I still have no regrets and love my painted piano!! :)
