Piano Bench with Potential
She's beautiful
I had bought this sad little piano bench from an auction. Right away I knew what I wanted to do with it.
  1. I checked over the Bench and fixed any cracks or chips with wood glue. I took apart the lid and hinges.
  2. Using mineral spirits, I cleaned the bench and let air dry.
  3. Using a 220 grit sandpaper, I gave the bench a little once over.
Sealing small wood cracks
After I lightly sanded the bench I prepped it for painting.
Ready for paint
  1. I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Midnight Blue. I applied the first coat and let dry over night and then added a second coat.
  2. When the second coat was dry, I added Fusion Tough Coat to seal in the paint. Since this bench will be used on a regular basis it was best to coat it.
  3. Now came the tricky part. Cautiously and carefully I took my time and used copper leaf on the legs. I taped off the parts that I wanted to leaf. Using leaf primer I applied only to the areas that I wanted the copper leaf to stick to. This took ALOT of patience. I mean ALOT.
Pretty ain't she?
  1. After the legs were done in copper leaf, I carefully and painstakingly applied the decorative copper leaf on the front.
  2. I used a small fine paint brush to make the strokes and applied the leafing. This probably took longer than painting the whole bench. 😉
  3. I picked up a small decorative ceramic piece that is in the middle of the bench at a small antique shop. I finished it with primer and copperleaf.
  4. Once copperleaf was dry I sealed it with a thin coat of modge Podge.
  5. Using "no more nails" I fastened the decorative piece to the bench.
  6. I had previously measured and marked out the centre of the bench with chalk.
All finished
I had full intentions of selling this piece when I bought the bench at auction, but now that she's done, I decided to keep it all for myself.
