Big Time Foyer Makeover

Hi guys. I'm not going to beat around the bush. Let's talk about this photo, shall we?
Ya. It's the picture I snapped on moving day (which was also a day that we were experiencing a tropical storm!!), facing the foyer in our new-to-us house. That's not brick. It's paint. Textured paint. Those aren't trees (haha!). Clearly textured paint. In fact, that paint went all down the stairs around and above all the doors. It was everywhere.
At first we didn't know what we wanted out of the space. We had no clue how the light bounced or even how the space would flow for us. So we did a quick fix and threw up some super cheap wall paper that wasn't terrible - but wasn't to our taste and definitely wasn't a long term solution. We also did a bit of painting and 'beachified' the built-in railing shelf with some planking.
But the day came when that cheap wall paper could take no more. It was closing off the space anyway because it was actually quite dark. We had to make a change. Looking down at the front door (and the weird trim above the door?) it was like a tunnel.
So over the course of a few weekends, we set to make things right and to bring some 'boldness' back into the space. (The rest of our house is mainly white.) And here's where we are now.
Painted the door, added wall paper into the coat closet with some storage and style. And we switched out the lighting and the trim.
AND - (Here's the bold and controversial choice we made) - we painted a giant yellow 'tea towel' stripe on the top wall. It's only 3.5 feet wide - so really, if and when we decide we don't like it, it's easy enough to paint over. (Way easier than a 15 foot high mural, let me tell you! haha)
Other than the yellow - we kept things fairly simple and straightforward. The entry functions much better for us now :)
Thanks so much for reading. You can find more details and info on this makeover and more on our blog at www.diypassion.com - happy Hometalking everyone :D

It looks fresh and clean. That's the first impression so go with it! good job. However, I love your stairs. Next summer I am covering ours in wood. I never thought about doing the backsplash in wood as well. Would you take a close up picture of the lip and under molding so I can see what they did? thanks so much!!!! Deb in Arlington

I really like the pop of yellow. I think too many people play it safe. Your whole look is fresh and inviting.
