A hook rail coat rack in 11" of space
Here's the problem: in the winter, I use the kitchen door from my deck. The basement entry, which is unheated, has several hookrails on which to hang coats, but I want my outerwear to be warm when I put it on.
Also there's an assortment of lanyards & nametags, a shoulder bag, a totebag or two, and other small items hanging here.
I'd installed this bicycle-shaped hook along with an IKEA TJUSIG twig-shaped wall rack. But it wasn't getting it done.
(Planning to mount the removed wall rack in another location. Can't have too much storage!)
The bare canvas. Lightswitch is for the exterior motion-detecting light; it's always on, no access needed. All the small pieces of tape are to mark the stud locations. I measured the length for the hook rails, then cut this wide moulding to fit at Home Depot.
After painting the cut molding, I let it dry...several coats worth...and positioned it on the wall. Drilled some holes through the stud locations, screwed it in place.
First basket in place. The rest of my kitchen is white with blue square tiles, so I was pleased to find this navy blue basket. Removed its hanging hardware, and replaced with some repurposed from the picture framing department.
Already had to revise the design -- the first basket was too low. Where to put my boots?
So I removed the lowest basket, and re-attached it above the other two. Perfect place for gloves and scarves!
Now to place all the hooks.
Positioning the hooks on the rail
The upper hook rail is in place.
All finished...
...and in service.
I might add fancy Pinterest-y labels for the baskets later on.
