My family and I share a hall coat closet, and it is so frustrating when I can't find my coat from the vast amount of coats of my entire family. This DIY post is how I made it easier for each one of us to find our coats quickly. Feel free to follow along and try it yourself!
How to Easily Organize Family Coats in a Coat Closet
BEFORE picture: This is what our coat closet looked like before. While it is pretty organized, we still had issues finding the right coat since we all had almost the same color coats. I also have two adult children living in the house, so finding the right size coat was difficult.
This Washi tape roll had several colors. To make it easy for me, I just kept the colors I was going to use. I picked 4 colors for our family - Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. Blue was for my husband, Green was for my son, Yellow was for my daughter, and I used red for me.
First, I changed out all my hangers to be wood ones. This was because plastic ones were used and tended to break with the heavier coats.
I then added shoulder covers to protect out-of-season coats from dust.
Then at the top of each hanger, I added a small strip of Washi tape and wrapped it around the end of the stem of the hanger hook. It was far enough above the coat that the coat didn't hide it.
Here's another view from when I used the green washi tape.
This is what it looked like finished.
And this is how it looked after I was finished wrapping all the hangers. I really like it! And, I am not frustrated looking for my coats any longer.
FYI - I had to inform each family member about which color their coats were so there was no confusion.
