I had an old IKEA (MOLGER) bench seat outside that I was thinking of getting rid of, but as I always like to try and repurpose things I decided I would turn it into a bike rack/station for the kids bikes.

BEFORE

I started by taking the screws out the bottom and removing the bottom shelf.

Removing the bottom shelf

Once I had removed the shelf, I used a hammer to pop out some of the slats so that the wheels of the kids bikes would fit in the gaps, acting as a support stand.

Once I had removed some slats and checked that the wheels would fit in them, I then screwed the shelf onto the front of the bench.

I predrilled some new holes first and then used the old screws to attach it.

Originally (as seen in the pic below) I removed 2 slats in a row for a wider gap but I later put one back as the smaller gap worked a lot better.

Attaching the shelf to the front

I then used a little saw to cut off the little wooden dowels from where the slats were.

Next, I gave it all a good clean with some soapy water (it was pretty dirty & dusty).

I had painted it with exterior paint a few years before but it was due for a “freshen” up, so once I had cleaned & dried it, I gave the whole thing a light sand and then repainted it using some fence paint I had in the garage.

Repainting it.

I did 2 coats of paint, and left it for around 12 hours to completely dry.

And that was it! Now this little bench has a new look & purpose. It works perfectly as a bike rack (just gotta teach the kids to actually put there bikes back there now 🤣), and it also works as a good little spot to put their boots & helmets.
