Colour flow

When you enter my home via the front door, the dining room is on the left and a formal sitting room on the right. Directly ahead is the family room (large marble columns frame that entryway) which has white slip-covered furniture and chairs and some dark wood pieces. My problem is that the dining room is predominantly blue - I have a dresser packed full of Delft Blue and Cobalt blue pieces. In the formal sitting room, I have an antique fireplace mantle (which can be painted) but the antique furniture is dark wood with pink French toile. What should I do? Paint the formal room furniture white and recover in blue Toile? Any suggestions would be so much appreciated. Looking for photos to post

Without seeing some pictures it is hard to make suggestions. However let me offer just a couple of thoughts. Can you add a couple of pink accessories to the dining room? Maybe 3 items. They don't have to be big items either. Maybe some pink depression glass if you have it. You already have blue accents in the sitting room with the dresser full of your blue pieces some of which are probably displayed on the top. I hate to say paint the antique furniture without seeing it but that is a possibility, white would be my choice. Follow through with the white, blue and pink color choices in the family room with maybe some print pillow covers that incorporate both pink and blue. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

It is beautiful. Do you wish to change the function of this room or just the look? I think a rug would be nice incorporating your color from the dining room and possibly one other that you wish to use or do use in the family room

If you like the Delft and Cobolt blue I would use these pieces and maybe go with a coloured toile with blue in it. I wouldnt paint the furniture, it is too beautiful. Maybe add a very chic rug as well to break up the furniture and floor colour. Reason; Your walls a quite light.

I think the formal set with the pink toile would be complemented with a blue (mid-range) geometric rug, think ikat. Put some of your delft blue items in this room also! It reminds me very much of a 100 year old home we used to own.

Hi Sue- what a stunning home you have! From your description, I am thinking that you are attempting to make the rooms on both sides of the entry complement one another. Since you are featuring all of the blue in the dining room side, then it would make sense to recover the pink toile with blues or grays that complement the blue dinnerware and move a few pieces over to that side. Delft to cobalt is a wide spectrum of blues that you can play with. They all work very well with dark floors, mahogany furniture and white walls. Then add area rugs on both sides that don't necessarily match, but are in the same overall color family.

Thank you all so very much. You have helped me go forward with my project. I have decided to paint the mantle in French gray and line the fireplace with silver tin tile. I shall recover the pink toile with blue toile and get matching blue and white dhurries for the dining and formal rooms.

Glad you're not painting your beautiful furniture. The walls in the one pic look a dirty gold ?? Hope you will paint, if not just the pic. Hopefully, not white - too cold and uninviting. Have you thought about changing the white to a warmer colour for your slip covers?

Hold on...don't do anything drastic...yet! Paint the living room a soft blue...leave the upholstery in "pink"... Paint the dining room "rose" and use the blue accents. For the floor, I would use two, not identical, oriental rugs of these colors plus some green, beige and other colors. Good rugs have lots and lots of colors. Paint the mantle "Dover White" by Sherwin-Williams... You could use some multi-stripped "silk" curtain panels that to ABOVE the arched window...have them puddle about 3 inches on the floor. Also, use some HEAVY rope fringe tieback...Repeat the fabric on a few "throw-pillows" for the sofa. Add some green plants...ferns, palms, aspidistra, "peace lilies"...this will give the space lots of personality. Instead of the multi-tiered pie table, use a couple of skirted tables repeating the fabric from the curtains and maybe some light blue "silk" square "toppers" and then put some old crocheted or lace table cloths or even crotched bedspreads.
