Ugly planter inside by front door, what to do with it?

Small front entrance with second door to garage, and hall closet with double door. The first 2 steps up to living area have a landing then, turn 90 degrees to further stairs. The planter is presently covered with a board covered in carpet to match the stairs and landing (so know body can fall in); the outside wall beside the planter is glass block. The planter is framed with wood trim, and is not quite full depth of the space as there is a small space heater built in with vent close to floor to heat the hallway. I don't want a planter and could use more space to sit & put shoes on and storage for gloves and dog leashes etc. There is a skylight in the ceiling directly above planter as well. What to do with this space?

I had an ugly planter that I just took out. Mine was 4' high and by the front door and heavier than one would think an empty planter should be. If you don't want to take it out, can you convert it to a space for shoes and such? A friend had a similar planter built it up in wood to be a mini-shoe/glove storage spot.
