The Easy Upcycled DIY Key Holder

I love creating useful bits from found items and reinventing roadside trash into funky treasure. Spying cast-off pieces of wooden goodness always gets the wheels turning in my refashionista brain!

The next time you spot a little wooden box in the trash remember my easy upcycled key holder tutorial and take it home to create your own useful bit of DIY décor!

I discovered that little wooden box on the side of the road, took it home, cleaned it up and grabbed some paint and small hooks from my stash.

I gave that sad little box a few bright and cheerful coats of orange paint.

Added some more funky colours with help from my kiddo and, once dry, screwed the hooks into the top of the inside of the box.

Then attached our fancy new key holder to the wall.

A bit of imagination easily transformed that tossed out box into a useful bit of colourful décor!

While this is a very cute idea, and great for holding something like coffee mugs or other items, if you are going to use it to hang keys, I would suggest you hang it inside a closet or a cabinet door, instead of next to the front or back door. If someone were to break into your home, that person has immediate access to all of your keys. They can open your shed, your detached garage, or whatever else you have keys for. They will have keys to any vehicles at your house. I had a friend who hung all her family's sets of keys by the side door to the garage. Her home was broken into while the family was on vacation. The burglars made a much larger haul than ever expected, because they had access to the garage and the family's pick-up truck. They loaded up the truck and stole that also. Just a word to the wise.

Your point is well made. No matter where we keep our keys on a daily basis I would think most people would hide their keys when they are out of town.
