I've wanted to design my own front door mat for the longest time!

Generally I have one of those big mats you can pick up from most big box stores. They certainly do the trick, but I desired something more stylish...

So when I paid a visit to Ikea, I stocked up on a few of their plain larger Trampa door mats.

Once home, I had just the design in mind.... teaming up the large mat with a perfectly sized stencil pattern, this happened in a matter of minutes!

I can't believe how easy this was and how cute it turned out! Which has me questioning... what took me so long?

Desire a freshened up door mat done easy too? Here's how I did it:

Start with a plain door mat

Be on the lookout for a plain door mat that can be painted. Most anything will do!

I chose this Trampa cocoa mat from Ikea sized at 24" x 36".

About the stencil

Next up was deciding on a design for the mat. I love timeless patterns so I decided to give Buffalo Check - Large a go. It ended up being the PERFECT size for this mat!

Buffalo Check is avail in 2 sizes you can find HERE

Stencil tips

Since this was a large mat and large stencil, I used a Staalmeester large wax brush. It's made out of natural bristles which adds the perfect amount of stiffness stenciling requires!

The mat was stenciled in Fusion Mineral Paint's Coal Black.

How to stencil:

  • Position stencil in the centre of the mat and hold with tape and pins.
  • Load stencil brush, then wipe most paint off onto a rag.
  • Tap empty squares first, then tap thin lines.
  • To continue pattern, lift stencil and align like-minded pattern.

The finished mat!

Then BAM! The finished Buffalo Checked mat was done in a flash! Using a large stencil and a large brush makes this one very quick project!

Isn't it a stunner?!

Tip: Painted mats can wear over time, however they are easy to touch up if you have the stencil and paint on hand.

The mat was adorable by itself, however I decided to layer mine on top of a larger mat for a little more impact...

And there it is! Cute and stylish! And it works great too!

A buffalo checked pattern appears complicated... but a stencil makes it easy. This look would also be adorable for a kitchen... hmmm.... time to look for another mat to stencil!

Imagine the possibilities! Choose a mat and colour that works best for your front door, and you have an instant, custom door mat anytime you wish!

And here's how it looks with my woodsy screen door! Which goes to prove, this look can go with anything. Just ask Sky...

Love the door mat, especially with that sweet cat looking out the screen door.

These checks look great on the wooden end table also. Just a hint of design goes a long way. TFS
