Metal Wall Art to Ceiling Medallion

I hope all is going well for you and yours. Today I have a fun, easy, and completely awesome project for you!
It all started with a walk down the clearance aisle at Hobby Lobby. As I scanned the aisle my eye fell on a piece of wall art, a iron compass. My mind started reeling with ideas of what I could do with this find. I decided to turn it into a ceiling medallion for the Captain Nemo study.
We went from this unassuming piece of wall art…
to this fabulous and unique ceiling medallion!
Isn’t it amazing! What’s even more fun – this project became a family affair. My folks were visiting and doing projects just comes naturally. 😉

Materials:

Iron piece

Hooks

Dremmel with sander attachment or a file

Drill bit the size of fan downrod

Paint
Step One:

Uninstall your ceiling fan or light fixture. Since we had a fan – we then measured the fan’s downrod. This determined the drill bit size we needed,
Step Two:

Carefully drill out the center of your iron piece. Take your time and make sure your batteries are fully charged… ahem.
Ah, yes that is our watch cat… Sugars. She kept a watchful eye on the project while we waited for the drill battery to charge. HA HA!
Step Three:

Clean up the burrs with a hand file or a dremmel attachment. (My poor tomato plant in the background… the heat was just too much for it.

Step Four:

Paint – of course this is optional. I wanted the “medallion” to match the metallic color of the “riveted” wall treatment. I painted the little hooks the same metallic color in hopes that they would “just go away” once installed.
Step Five:

Time to hang! Slide the medallion over the down rod before securing all the electrical finery.
Step Six:

Mark the spots for your little ol’ hooks and install. Slide the medallion on the hooks and voila! Awesome ceiling jewelry!
You never know what inspiration is awaiting you on the clearance aisle! Pin it below!

Till Later,

I really love the look but just wondering - does the rod band against the medallion when it's on? My fans all seem to wobble a bit when on.

I really love your idea for the wall-art, very creative. I also LUV Sugars. I have one exactly like (her/him) which was a stray until I took to feeding her--you know the rest. She presented my garage with a litter before she was tame enough to catch & have spayed but none of the 5 have her coloring. I named her Camo-Cat because she totally blends into any background. Do you know what it is called, not calico?

Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! That is just what I want to do for my stained glass ceiling light, but I don't even have an electric box cover. (One of the perks of living in unincorporated farmland!) My electrician made sure everything was safe, so it's just a matter of aesthetics - and being afraid to climb a ladder that high - it hangs over the staircase.

You are lucky to have a handy, helpful family. I, on the other hand, get to learn by experimenting and DIYing. Which is why my ceiling light is still lacking penache`.

I was afraid your artwork would fall apart once you severed the weld points. Did you need to do any reinforcement or is the medallion going to remain sturdy on its own? And, I have to ask, do you have the four compass points .. N, S, E, W .. facing the right directions? Thanks for sharing your gorgeous project!
