Laminate Wood Floor Makeover - PAINTED!
Learn how to paint any floor to look like Polished Concrete.
Before we jump into this floor painting DIY I wanted to give you a little bit of a background about our ex-floor. Photo above is showing what it looked liked before I painted it. When we moved into this home our floor was wood laminate throughout most of our home. Seeing as it was laminate in the kitchen as well, it was in pretty rough condition. Especially right by the sink. I decided to paint it and I chose to go with white and a taupe color for the stencil. (photo above is the first time I painted my laminate floor)
Fast forward a few weeks of stenciling my kitchen and dining room were ready to seal the deal. I decided to go with an oil based polyurethane, AND OH BOY!! Biggest mistake EVER!! Already having a lot of yellow from the taupe shade I picked for the stencils the polyurethane turned solid yellow. So.., my floor went from being crisp white and taupe to an old linoleum looking floor you’d find in an old mobile-home. Which is kind of ironic because we live in a mobile-home/house.. LOL. Guess it’ll always be drawn to its origins! That said I finally got fed up with the floor and we decided to repaint it.
To begin I sanded down my whole floor and applied special bonding primer.
Then I taped off all my edges and applied a coat of gray paint.
To create my polished concrete effect I dripped on different hues of gray and rubbed them around with a sponge.
Then to seal of the floor we used a semi-gloss floor finish.
And that's how the floor looks after. :D
I love the different hues of gray popping through.

I love painting and it can be just as expensive as buying and replacing old laminate depending on what your doing with paint! Great idea it looks great. I would totally do it at my house but I have and will always have a couple dogs and I just don’t think this would hold up with them around especially in high traffic paths. So I wondered if you have dogs or kids and a husband and let me know how well your paint holds up! I want to know how the experiment holds up in a couple years!

Very nice! Really love the idea! However, I have a question. If you used a different finish on the stencil, would it be ok? Was it the oil based instead of water based? And what did you use on the gray? Your supply list shows oil base and it says it gives a warm gold glow. If it was clear, would it have been ok on the stencil? Sorry so many questions, but a little confused. 😕😕 Thanks!
Do you know if this can be done on laminate (Bad Laminate wood) flooring? Can't afford to replace it right now.
I’m a real crafting virgin in my 70’s (never too old aye?) I’ve decoupaged eight metal fence pots, the kind with hooks over the fence. I’ve sort of done everything you’ve done but with tissue paper, allowed them all to dry then used non-yellowing outside sealer, three coats, so far so the same principle, but you put outside modpodge on AFTER the sealer, should I be doing that to my metal pots? Sorry I know this isn’t related to your GORGEOUS bowls, and they are really lovely. The top coat of modpodge didn’t dull their colour at all.
please can you advise me here? Should I put a final coat of outside modpodge on my metal pots before leaving them out in the English autumn (wet and cold).
