It was suggested that I rip up my wood laminate flooring, lay plywood, and lay the sheet vinyl down. Why do I need to rip up the wood?

Cause its a floating floor that expands and contracts with the amount of moisture, and it won't supply a stable base for your linoleum. Rip up the linoleum and then either apply it to the subfloor if its clean, smooth and stable or put down the plywood and apply the linoleum.

Laminate flooring expands and contracts with temp changes, Vinyl does not. Any imperfections in the laminate flooring present and future will be transferred to the vinyl. If the floor is smooth and level I don't see why you would need to put down plywood after removing the laminate.

Both Sharon and William are right about the laminate flooring needing to come out first before the new sheet vinyl is put down. They are also right about the subfloor that is presently under the laminate needing to be clean, stable and level, before any new flooring is installed over top it.

As long as it is level and smooth you should be fine
