The mill where I bought my hardwood flooring also made paneling. Same stuff with just a little different cut. So yes. It's the same wood. You do not mention what kind of paneling so I had to assume that this is what you had in mind.
If you are talking about the $5 Masonite 4x8 sheets of paneling, yeah, you could still put it on the floor. Heck you could put squirrel pelts on the floor and cover it with mod-podge. Please don't send anyone to me who wants to know why you did it.
Hello! Wood paneling is meant to be hung on walls and simply doesn’t have the durability needed to withstand folks walking on it. It will also bring down the value of your home because folks will be able to see exactly what was done!
The paneling will crack, it's not made for the floor. Try 12x12 squares, with glue on the back, pull the paper off, and stick it to the floor. Start from the middle and work your way out to the walls. Each tile tells you where to place it by the arrows on the bottom. Make sure your boxes have the same lot#s, so the shade is the same. The better the tile the more money you pay. It depends on what room this is going in.
I think it would have to be very sturdy and thick to do that. I read up on this and here's an article I found: https://www.hunker.com/12002268/how-to-use-wall-paneling-for-flooring

I agree! Paneling is too thin, not durable enough, and usually a thin layer over a thin substrate. Would not last to daily wear and tear.
I wouldn't recommend for wood paneling is much thinner than an engineered hardwood and you probably would end up with surface scuffing and breaking.
Wall paneling will not hold well to traffic, just too thin unless your wall paneling is heavy duty.
Not fit for purpose, won't last long!
