Go for it! About one year ago my husband and I pulled up ALL the carpet in our house and stained the concrete floors. We used Sherwin Williams concrete stain (comes in several colors) and stained all the floors. We just rolled it on - very quick and easy. We put 3 coats on the floor and then did 3 coats of the clear coat. They really turned out very nice and they are easy to clean.
One great blog that walks you through this:

And, a bit more involved:

In addition to removing the carpet, pad (cut into manageable strips with box cutter) and tack strips (I use a pry bar and a hammer)(see this article: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/remove-metal-carpet-nail-strips-39520.html), you will likely have a) to repair divots made when you removed the tack strips. Fill to level with surrounding floor with a concrete patch b) to remove glue and bits of pad from where the pad was glued to floor surface. This is very hard to remove, and involves adhesive remover (such as TileGuard, available at home improvement stores), paintbrush or sponge, plastic putty knife (wider ones will work faster) (since you are working on concrete you can probably use a metal one), rubber gloves, old towels or rags and a fan (for ventilation). You may also want to try dry sanding the glue off with a sander or buffer with a sanding pad. This will be tedious work. Once you have finished this step, vacumn and mop thoroughly before you paint (I would use exterior floor paint followed by poly sealer or epoxy garage floor paint). Good Luck!

My concrete laundry floor is painted. I suggest applying a good sealer before floor painting.
