The vinyl is secure, but if I do have to take it up, what is the best way? Currently looking for a durable oak flooring for my kitchen.

If the vinyl is solid, then you can add flooring over top. The vinyl is probably glued down so will be messy to remove.

If you want it to look nice and last do it right the first time. It's never a good idea to place new flooring over old eventually there will be problems unless you're putting in carpet. Most vinyl can be easily removed with a scraper, scorer, vinyl knife and adhesive remover. Always remove floor/wall boards and start in an inconspicuous corner. Follow direction on adhesive remover. Before setting your new wood floor make sure you have a level floor to start. If you have a concrete foundation that is not level make a subfloor or fill in until level and then put in your oak floors. If you're buying oak strips and not the tiles put in the subfloor.
